• Optimization of the Remaining Steel/Slag left in the tundish end of sequence and gaining consistency heat after heat

• When draining the tundish, no slag flow occurs until a characteristic steel level relative to the refractory bottom is reached.

• Below this level the Vortex effect will start, slag will be drained into the mould. Of course, the Vortex effect with immediate drain of slag into the mould must be prevented.

• The Vortex Breaker System (VBS) will be installed on the tundish bottom.

• By using the Vortex Breaker System only, a German steel plant has reduced the remaining steel/slag amount in the tundish from approx. 9,5t to 3,5t in average.  So they have gained about 6 t more yield!

• The decision to stop teeming still depends on the operator.

• The use of the VBS allows the tundish to be drained to lower and consistent levels!

• Improved tundish deskulling performance

• Reduced transition length for grade changed practice; this results in reduced scrap as well as reduced amount of non-prime slabs
